In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basics on how those nearing or reaching retirement age can maximize this part of their life. Many individuals spend many years preparing for retirement, and naturally want to make the most out of it when the time comes.
At Heavenly Walk-In Tubs, we’re proud to assist with one small piece of this puzzle by providing portable bathtubs and numerous other walk-in tub solutions to ensure aging individuals have no issues with their bathing needs. In today’s part two, we’ll go over a few other general tips we can offer on maximizing your retirement years in multiple ways.
We talked about making and keeping plans in part one of this series, and one specific area to keep an eye on here is various special events. We’re talking about regular events like birthdays, holidays, and other family or friend events like anniversaries, graduations or weddings.
Many of these events require no specific planning besides noting the date and time, which retirees can do easily using a phone, computer or even a physical calendar if they prefer it. The benefit of technological options here, if you’re comfortable using them, is the ability to set yearly reminders and recurring events so you don’t have to redo this process entirely each year.
Many have spent years or even decades saving up for retirement, and now is the time to capitalize on some of those efforts. You have to do this responsibly, of course – a general recommendation in the retirement planning community is to spend about 4% of your overall retirement portfolio each year, though you should check with a financial advisor about your specific situation. That said, you should have some room to reward yourself just a bit after years of saving.
Most people spend the majority of their lives collecting possessions, but retirement can be a time to reverse this mindset and look to get rid of things you don’t need. Many choose to donate large collections of items, whether we’re talking clothes, furniture or any other type. Not only can this process help out others in many cases, it will declutter your home and simplify daily life in many cases.
Finally, our single broadest recommendation is a thematic one: Simply take time to enjoy daily life when you can. You may not necessarily be able to carry out every hope you had during your retirement, but you absolutely can find purpose and meaning in every day you spend in retirement. Be spontaneous where appropriate, and patient when it’s more prudent. Live your best life!
